Micron Technology is now claiming to offer the world's first native SATA 6 Gb/sec. solid state drive, the RealSSD C300 SSD. The company also says that it's the fastest drive for both notebooks and desktops, providing faster OS boot times, quicker program loads, and turbo-boosted data transfer and file copying.
With those kind of claims, the SSD sounds as if it's on fire, and on a performance level, perhaps it is--even while using the current SATA 3 Gb/sec. standard. But when connected to the faster interface, the SSD is capable of read throughput speeds of up to 355 Mb/sec., and write throughput speeds of up to 215 Mb/sec. Micron says that the drive even scores 45,000 using the HDD Suite in PC Mark Vantage.
Micron's RealSSD drive is expected to ship in Q1 2010, and will arrive in 128 GB and 256 GB flavors (sorry, no pricing as of yet). As for form factors, Micron will offer both the 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch. The drives will also utilize Micron's 34nm MLC NAND flash memory which supports the high-speed ONFI 2.1 standard.
To get those SSD juices flowing in anticipation, Micro uploaded a YouTube video that benchmarks the "world's fastest client SDD." The benchmark uses a motherboard using Intel's X48 chipset, the Intel Core2Duo E8500, and Micron's 2 GB DDR3 1066 (PC3-8500) RAM. |
