In a world where the smartphone is starting to dominate, and apps aim to expand the functionality available in a single device, one company is taking a different route providing simple gadgets that do just one thing. That company is Peek, and it is already known for its mobile device that just does e-mail, but now it has another product that just does Twitter.
It’s called TwitterPeek and comes in gray of aqua (Twitter blue), has a full QWERTY keyboard, color screen, and scroll wheel. It can do everything Twitter does including viewing and sending tweets, receiving direct messaging, and retweeting. If all you do is Twitter then this is probably the device for you. As it only does Twitter though, there is one major downside – links in tweets will show up just as text. You can’t click them as the device won’t do the web.
TwitterPeek is available exclusively through Amazon it costs $99.99 with 6 months of service and then $7.95 a month after that. Alternatively you can pay $199.99 and get lifetime service.
Unusually the news of this device wasn’t broken by a website or press release first. Instead, Josh from Engadget appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and revealed the device telling Fallon he just got the scoop. As you can see from the video above Josh’s description of it just doing Twitter was met with laughter from the audience and Fallon saying, “what, that’s it?”.
The Peek press release describes TwitterPeek as a device that:
promises to unleash the thrill of Twitter on-the-go by enabling millions to tweet interesting news, stories, and ideas as soon as they happen – in real time – without an expensive smartphone or data plan.

Matthew’s Opinion
I know that Twitter is wildly popular and growing its user base every day, but I don’t think we have reached a point yet where just using Twitter is communication enough for someone. If you want to remain connected then you still need voice, e-mail, and web access and that’s why the smartphone is so popular.
Even if you treat TwitterPeek as just a device for staying up-to-date with your interests or communicating with friends, I still think it is going to be a disappointing experience. The first time you receive a tweet saying something like, “new video released for XXXXX (link)” you are going to have to turn to another device to access it. That just sounds frustrating to me.
Twitter is a standalone service, but I don’t think it works on its own. It’s a way of conveying information, but also relies on links to the web. Add web browsing to TwitterPeek and it works
