Intel Core i7 Extreme Retail Box CPU Introduction
Intel has officially announced to utilizing “Core” as the designation of its Nehalem framework CPU, as well as designated as “Intel Core i7” Series. The extreme edition is called “Intel Core i7 Extreme” series.
Intel Core i7 is a 45nm with 4 cores and 8MB L3 Cache CPU, as well as supporting Triple-channel Memory. It embedded Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) and the CPU utilized LGA 1366 design (Land Grid Array) also known as Socket B, as well as utilized the new generation of Hyper-Threading technology, called Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), therefore it has 4 physical cores and 8 logical processors. Furthermore, 8MB L3 cache will be used in this series.
Intel is expected to launch 3 types of Core i7 CPU including Corei7-965 Xtreme Edition, Core i7-940, and Core i7-920.
As for the flagship Core i7-965 Xtreme Edition, it has 3.2Ghz frequency, 8MB L3, and QPI with transfer rate 6.5GT/s, estimate the price with be US$999 pcs (based on 1000 pcs). The Core i7-940 is targeted on performance market, it has 2.93Ghz frequency with 8MB L3 but the QPI transfer rate has reduced to 4.8GT/s, estimate the price with be US$562 pcs (based on 1000 pcs). The Core i7-920 is targeted on mainstream market, it has 2.66 Ghz frequency with 8MB L3 and the QPI transfer rate is same as Core i7-940.
The following is the introduction of Intel Core i7 CPU, the Intel Core i7 Extreme.

Core i7 CPU is a 64 bits with 4 cores CPU launched by Intel in 2008. It utilized x86-64 instruction with Nehalem framework as infrastructure. It supports the similar technology of Hyper-threading and being 4 cores CPU with 8 logical processors. As the model number, it will not utilize Duo or Quad to identify the number of core. The chipset that is compatible with Core i7 is Intel X58, supporting Triple-channel memory and its memory controller is embedded in the CPU. Core i7 is supported Turbo Mode (Dynamic Speed) technology, the CPU frequency can increased step by step when the CPU overloading. This function doesn’t required OS being upgraded, it is fully monitored by the hardware. As the Power Gates technology, it can be shut down during the idle mode. Compared with the last generation CPU of Core 2 Duo, the core resistance of Core i7 can be shut down, the electricity doesn’t need to pass through the core. Each core can be operating in different frequency and voltage individually. These functions are provided by a unit, it occupied around 1 million transistors. The CPU has adopted modeling design, such as each core, each memory controller, and each input/output controller to complement different number. This act can assist the product to be easily targeted on different segment and each model has individual voltage to assists the energy saving.
The purpose of Core i7 is to increase the speed of calculation and simulation ability. Therefore, the performance will be limited when gaming. The L2 cache is also decreased to 256KB for each core. As the L3 cache, the 8MB cache will be shared with each CPU.
The voltage of memory will be synchronism with the CPU core. Until now, Intel has only support DDR3-800 and DDR3-1066 standard. As for DDR-1333, due to the CPU can only accept the lower voltage but the high speed memory means highest voltage adoption, therefore, Intel still has a doubt of supporting this standard.
The second shipment of X58 chipset can carry out asynchronous voltage to allow the user to conduct overclocking. Furthermore, only XE edition is originally able to adjust the frequency of memory. However, Intel has decided to allow all the edition of Core i7 CPU to be able to adjust the frequency of memory and QPI.
